Ben's Perspective
Last week was my final working week before the start of my sabbatical. I celebrated the milestone with a few colleagues and a couple of drinks. Mel has about four weeks left before she joins me, so the plan is to spend the time on a solo adventure, one a little too extreme for her.
A few months ago, I thought about cycling the entire Oregon coast; however, after some research, this idea has snowballed, and now the goal is to cycle from Vancouver, BC, around the Olympic Peninsula, down the Oregon Coast, and finish in the Redwoods in Northern California.
Although I really enjoy cycling, I've never done a multi-day, let alone a multi-week bike-packing trip. It feels like a great way to disconnect from work and test myself physically and mentally.
Mel's Perspective
Firstly, when Ben says "a couple of drinks," we all know this is a lie. At 1:45 a.m. we returned home with a cardboard cutout of Ben sitting in the front seat of an Uber. Whether or not Ben remembers getting home is a different story! But Ben and I do love a good get-together, and this definitely was one of them!
I have four weeks and two days left at work (but who's counting?). And when Ben said above that he was off on an adventure that was too extreme for me, he's 100% accurate. Cycling is not my thing (unless it's a stationary Peloton), so riding >1000 miles and then camping in the potential rain to do it all again the next day isn't my idea of fun! I'm excited for him to disconnect but without being too soppy... I will miss him (and his cooking... I will likely be on baked beans and toast for 3.5 weeks until his return).
